Live Music, Coffee and Community: KAA’s Melodic Connections Summer Series
So far the Ken Anderson Alliance has held a successful week of Summer Series concerts in 2022. The outdoor patio at Just Brew Silverton provided a beautiful backdrop for our adult day service program participants and Melodic Connections to bring cafe-goers their greatest hits. The success of the concert series is in part thanks to Emily King, the director of day services. Here, Emily offers some insight into how the KAA Summer Series was developed and the value it brings to the adult day program. Plus she shares a favorite memory from past live concerts.
Why did KAA start the Summer Series?
Emily: The goal of our Summer Series is to give our musicians a chance to show off what they have been learning while attending the KAA day program. It’s one thing to learn songs but another to showcase your talents and connect with an audience through music. It gives our day programs a sense of purpose and isn’t that what it’s all about?
What kind of music is played?
Emily: The Melodic Connections “greatest hits” consist of country, rock n’ roll, Motown, Disney, oldies but goodies and much more. Our participants are the ones that run the show when it comes to picking out songs they want to learn. They name it, we learn it!
What does the Summer Series mean for the KAA community?
Emily: The Summer Series is much more than just sitting around and playing songs. It is our way of showing that the folks we serve have incredible talents to share to the world. We just help build that platform.
Can you share a favorite moment from the last concert series?
Emily: A fun memory from the Summer Concert Series was watching one of our participants get up on stage and sing a song when he has never done that before. He gave the staff the biggest grin and high five afterwards. It really seemed to make his day and push him to do new things!
