Cincinnati Public Library Plays a Transformational Role in Disability Inclusion
The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library is redefining what public libraries can be. More than a place for books, it’s a powerful community hub playing a transformational role in disability inclusion. With innovative, accessible programs designed for adults with disabilities, the library is setting a new standard for equity and engagement.
One of its most beloved offerings is Adult Storytime—a sensory-friendly program specifically created for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. These interactive sessions feature stories, music, and movement in a calm, welcoming environment. The goal isn’t just literacy—it’s connection, joy, and community.
Another standout is the library’s MakerSpace, a creative lab packed with audio and video recording studios, 3D printers, craft tools, and more. Here, people of all abilities can explore technology, bring their ideas to life, and express themselves in new ways. MakerSpace locations make possible KAA’s Hero Radio Podcasts and Urban Soundscapes recordings, and also opportunities for program members to make buttons and other items.

The library also offers a range of inclusive features—accessible technology, adaptive furniture, quiet spaces, and staff trained in disability awareness. These thoughtful accommodations ensure that everyone feels safe, supported, and included from the moment they walk through the doors.
By intentionally designing spaces and programs that prioritize accessibility, the Cincinnati Public Library goes beyond inclusion—it fosters empowerment. It’s a model of how public institutions can evolve to meet the needs of every community member.
