KAA Programs: Greater Than They Appear

Ken Anderson Alliance (KAA) provides programs ranging from community outings to music-making activities to career planning services. The benefits of these programs are often far greater than they appear.

Increasing Skills and Inclusion

“It’s great,“ says Kevin about volunteering at the Freestore Foodbank—he likes to help others. Kevin’s mother says volunteer activities help Kevin learn life skills like how to get along with people, and also when it’s time to work and when it’s okay to relax and joke around. More importantly, volunteering helps adults with disabilities build skills for employment and feel connected to their community.

Building Confidence and Connections

Rachel’s initial work responsibility at Nothing Bundt Cakes in Mason was folding boxes in the back of the store. Over time, Rachel moved to the front of the store greeting customers, filling orders, restocking cakes, and other tasks. Rachel has connected with her co-workers and various customers, all appreciating her smile and out-going personality.

Encouraging Self-Esteem and Social Bonding

“The music program is wonderful!” declares a KAA parent. “My son loves to practice and then get the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. The joy that the participants feel while performing is the best!” While encouraging focus and self-esteem, music also inspires social bonding through shared music activities.

Facilitating Friendships and Supports

“Its beautiful and awesome amazing. I love ya like family to me,” explains a KAA program participant. Engage outings help adults explore interests and engage in their community through shopping, bowling, dining out, and more. The relationships formed during the activities provide a strong sense of connection and social supports.

The mission of Ken Anderson Alliance (KAA) is to provide a quality of life that empowers adults with disabilities to develop and sustain lifelong relationships, independence, and self-esteem while contributing to the larger community. To further its mission, KAA provides a range of LIVE, WORK and ENGAGE opportunities including volunteer activities, employment supports, community engagement opportunities and social activities.
