Disability Pride Month: Celebrating Identity, Connections and Inclusion

July is Disability Pride Month—a time to celebrate the identities, voices, and contributions of people with disabilities, while also recognizing the ongoing work needed to build a truly inclusive world.

At Ken Anderson Alliance (KAA), Disability Pride is more than a moment. It’s a mindset. It’s built into everything we do year-round to empower adults with disabilities to build meaningful relationships, increase their independently, and contribute to their community.

Why Disability Pride Matters

Disability Pride Month began in 1990, the same year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. It serves as a powerful reminder that people with disabilities are not defined by limitations—but by strength, resilience, and pride in who they are.

Disability pride challenges outdated narratives and instead uplifts self-advocacy, visibility, and joy. It’s about taking up space, being heard, and celebrating the unique talents and perspectives of the disability community.

Pride in Action at KAA

We see pride in every person who thrives in our programs:

  • Amaryllis, who found a space where she could thrive socially, and develop into a caring, confident woman;
  • Dan, whose participation in PROGRAM provided opportunities to form connections in the local community and share his skills and talents;
  • Evan, who found a job where his co-workers connect with him and support him like family.

Disability Pride Month gives us a chance to celebrate these stories and push for more opportunities for inclusion, visibility, and equity.

Pride All Year Long

At Ken Anderson Alliance, we believe in a world where every adult with a disability can live a fulfilling, self-directed life—and be proud of who they are. That’s not just a goal for July. That’s our mission every day.

This Disability Pride Month, let’s celebrate identity, demand inclusion, and spread the pride.
